Human-Sensory-Specific Perspective
Grounding decisions in lived, embodied human experience — what AI cannot access and cannot simulate.
What this skill is
Human-sensory-specific perspective is the ability to bring the irreducibly human into your thinking and decision-making: the way things actually feel, sound, smell, and look in real life; the emotional texture of experiences; the physical and social context that shapes what things mean. It's the conscious act of asking "but what is this actually like for a human being?" — and using that answer to evaluate, redirect, or override AI outputs.
AI has no body and no sensory experience. It can describe the smell of rain or the feeling of grief through patterns in text, but it has never actually experienced either. That gap is not a deficiency to work around — it's a feature. The human perspective is uniquely yours, and in an AI-saturated world, it becomes one of the few genuinely non-replicable contributions you can make.
Why it matters in an AI world
AI is increasingly used to make or inform decisions that profoundly affect embodied human experience: what spaces feel like to live and work in, what health interventions feel like from the inside, what it's like to be a customer, a student, a patient. When human perspective is removed from these decision loops — when AI makes the call and no one asks "but what would this actually feel like to experience?" — the results tend to be technically correct and humanly wrong.
Children who develop this skill become the people who catch these failures. They're the ones who say "but have you actually stood in this space at 3pm when the sun hits it?" or "do you know what it's like to receive this message when you're already overwhelmed?" They bring the test of lived experience to AI-generated outputs, and that test is often where the most important errors are caught.
There's also an identity dimension. Children who are deeply connected to their own sensory and emotional experience are harder to manipulate by AI systems that simulate those experiences. They have a reference point — they know what real care, real connection, and real understanding feel like. They're less likely to accept engineered simulacra as the genuine article.
What it looks like in your child
- When evaluating AI output, they ask "but what would this actually be like for the person experiencing it?" — and use the answer to improve the output
- They regularly reference their own direct experience as evidence in conversations and arguments, not just abstract reasoning
- They're skeptical of plans and designs that haven't been tested against lived reality — they want to know if it's been tried, not just whether it makes sense in theory
- They can articulate what AI cannot know about a situation — the context, the emotional stakes, the physical reality — and use that gap productively
Challenge: Try this this week
The Reality Check. Take something AI helped create this week — a plan, a written piece, a design, a recommendation. Ask your child: "What does this not know? What is it missing that only someone who has actually been in this situation would know?" Spend 10 minutes making a list together. Then try to incorporate at least two of those missing elements into the output. This is the full human-perspective workout: identify the gap, then bridge it.
What to watch for
- Sensory bypass: They evaluate plans and outputs entirely abstractly — they never ask "what would this actually feel like?" and don't seem to miss the question
- AI-mediated experience: They increasingly experience the world through AI descriptions and simulations rather than direct encounter. They know about things without knowing things.
- Deferred human judgment: When AI gives a clear answer, they don't think to check it against direct experience — they treat the AI's lack of embodied experience as irrelevant rather than as a significant limitation
Games that develop this skill
Sensory Journalism — Pick any experience from the week and describe it using only sensory language: what you saw, heard, smelled, touched, tasted. No interpretations, no abstractions. Then ask: "What does that experience tell us about how to design something better for people who'll have it?" Connects sensory awareness to judgment.
The Empathy Audit — After playing any game, ask: "What would it actually feel like to be the person in this scenario — not the game piece, but the actual person?" Apply this to Monopoly (what does it feel like to be evicted?), Pandemic (what does it feel like to be in a lockdown?), Risk (what does it feel like to be on the losing side of a conquest?). Builds the habit of grounding abstract systems in human experience.
Experience vs. Description — Find something in your home that has an AI-generated description (a product listing, a recipe summary). Read the description first, then actually experience the thing. Where does the description fail? Where is it accurate? What did you know from experience that the description couldn't tell you?
